Multi-barreled cannon

To increase artillery rate of fire, inventors attempted multiplying barrels in an artillery system. Naturally it was not suitable for large-caliber cannons due to their excessive weight, but smaller ones loaded with grapeshot only favored from that. This was how the predecessor of modern machine-guns appeared. This weapon was of limited use. It was effective against tight enemy infantry or cavalry arrays. However, multi-barreled cannons featured short range of fire, heavy weight, and great difficulties in manufacturing, therefore they were soon out of use.
